Making high-quality cannabis-infused food can be a surprisingly difficult task, especially for first-timers or those with little overall cooking experience. To normally produce a medicated edible, it is necessary to slowly simmer raw cannabis in butter or oil on the stove.
Regularly stirring the butter or oil and using the right temperature is critical for optimizing the final product. I had known about this machine for several years and always wanted to try it. Having made edibles the more traditional way in the past, I was interested to see how much easier everything would be with a simplified process. We Should Have Read The Instructions
The first time my friends and I tried the machine, we did not use it correctly.
Cannabis needs to be heated to a certain temperature in order to undergo the process of decarboxylation, in which THC-acid becomes THC. The acid form of THC cannot directly activate cannabinoid receptors, so it does not produce psychoactive effects.

After running the machine for one cycle, we realized it was not going to decarboxylate the cannabis, so we ran it again. This may or may not have worked; regardless, the bottom of the machine charred slightly from the improper double use (we got that out with an alcohol soak). After straining out the cannabis from the butter, we used the infused substance in a flourless chocolate cake. This did not turn out so well, either because we used a bad recipe or because of our improper double extraction. I personally loved the taste, but the other three participants were less pleased.
Second Chance
For our second excursion, we properly decarboxylated the cannabis first in the oven. We used one ounce of cannabis and combined it with two cups of butter in the machine. Everything came out perfect this time, and we used the butter in a more pleasing recipe, a baked banana bread. The final result was beautiful, delicious, and very effective. One small piece was quite powerful and had virtually no cannabis taste.
In the past, making edibles was a daunting experience and the thought of it greatly diminished my desire to create them.
